Lord of the Rings musical planned for London stage
Okay. Bilbo, in the books, tended to sing. That whole "The road goes ever on and on. . ." thing. Frodo and Sam at different points, if I'm recalling this correctly, sing one song or another of Bilbo's. There was Tom Bombadil. He sang, didn't he? So, singing and, to some extent, music can be found in the saga.
But.
A musical? The Lord of the Rings? I can't yet see it. It could have potential, if done right. There's potential potential in there. Potentially, the potential for its potential could be realized. But it's a long way to fall if it doesn't work. Potentially speaking.
Tom Bombadil would be a sight to see. I'd be interested to know how they would do Gollum and Shelob. Aragon singing? That one's hard to imagine. Song so often turns things from the dramatic into the melodramatic; it's a fine line to walk.
I wonder who authorizes this sort of endeavor. Hopefully, someone in the Tolkien clan has a hand in it. I'd feel slightly more comfortable, somehow.
Despite my misgivings, I'd see the production if given the oppurtunity. Just to see it done.
