- Japanese classed with the usual company. Then visited Japanese speaking professor only to be humbled. I wrote a note asking (in perfect hiragana and katakana) if she was going to watch a soccer game this weekend (what with the World Cup). Her answer was something about not having cable television (kaburu terebi) and included the word for "where."
- Bumbled off to Muncie in Martin the Wonder Car to pick up my grandma's brand new (old) Buick. She's off to Tennessee tomorrow evening. I'm very sad.
"There's something wrong with me. I can't seem to keep a husband more than 30 years."
I've spent half the day missing her and she hasn't even left yet. Warm fuzzies.
--Grandma - Ice creamed with Jennifer. Memorable moments include her stopping mid-sentence, as if struck by lightning, to exclaim "Porche!" and turn almost 360 degrees to admire said car as it sped by. And of course, who can forget "I once kicked a baby. Do you remember that baby I kicked?" said in dead earnest.
- Then spent the evening (where else?) with the Hrubey Bros., where I assembled plastic ships, chased and captured the most delightful little toad, and played 10 PM soggy grass, foggy moon frisbee. (Thank you daylight savings time.) With the light as it was, it wasn't so much frisbee as "swat down the flying disc flung at your head by a close friend before it causes you physical harm." We used the same old saucer we always have -- a couple months ago we finally duct taped the edges so as not to cause our fingers to bleed. No longer bladed, tonight it acted as something of a clumsy blunt instrument.
- Came home and chatted with grandma some more. Always nice. I love her dearly. I don't at all know why I didn't think I would enjoy her visit. It's been one of the best things to happen all summer. I think I may take a weekend and visit her before school renews its lease on my soul.
